Hartford County resident James Macpherson, of Manchester, was behind the wheel of a 2002 Ford F-150 near Exit 40 in the southbound lanes when he crashed around 1:15 p.m., Connecticut State Police said.
The driver ahead of Macpherson said he saw the truck in his rearview mirror swerve off the road and into the grass median before abruptly pulling back onto the interstate and crashing into his vehicle, the police report said.
The impact turned Macpherson's truck and caused it to tumble violently down the highway, authorities said.
Paramedics took Macpherson to Hartford Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The man in the front vehicle was not injured, and the 37-year-old Florida woman in Macpherson's truck suffered minor injuries, police said.
State Police are investigating the crash.
